Why won’t my doctor see me after a car accident in Florida?

Daytona Beach, FL – When you’re in a car accident, the last thing you want to hear is that your primary physician won’t see you. If you search online what to do after a crash, seeing a doctor right away is listed as a must. The conservative advice is that you seek medical attention within 72 hours from the crash. That’s because if you don’t document your injuries properly you may have problems recovering damages from the insurance company.

Why do doctors refuse to see car accident victims?

If you press your physician for an answer, they’ll tell you that they are not equipped to treat injuries resulting from car accidents, which may be true to some extent. Even so, they should be able to refer you to a specialist, but the answer is still no.

The real reason many physicians won’t have anything to do with accident victims is that it involves a lot of paperwork and they’re not very sure who they can send the bill to. A minor injury, yes, they might accept to treat you for that as the bill can probably be settled though your Personal Injury Protection. However, if it’s more complicated than that and you’ll have to file a claim with the other driver’s insurance or sue the guy, that’s too much of a bother.

The question is who do you see then? One option is to reach out to an experienced Florida personal injury lawyer as these people know how to deal with such problems. Your lawyers may put you in touch with doctors they’ve worked with on past cases, doctors who know how billing works in accident cases and are not afraid of the extra paperwork.

In a pinch, go to the ER, get the treatment you need and your lawyers will sort out the bills later on.

Is alternative medicine covered by insurance?

The good thing about getting a personal injury lawyer is that you’ll have someone to keep an eye on the medical expenses and tell you what you can recover and what not.

For instance, if you suffer a back injury, you might want to see a chiropractor or get massage therapy. Are these covered by insurance?

There’s no definitive answer to this question. The best thing to do is have your Florida accident attorneys go over your insurance policy, including the fine print to tell you what’s what.

Most complementary and alternative treatments are nor covered by insurance, but there are exceptions.

The vast majority of insurance carriers will cover chiropractic treatment, but only a third of them will pay for acupuncture. Likewise, only a fraction, less than 20% of insurance companies, will pay for massage therapy and only if you can show that physical therapy didn’t help.

In any case, you’d better get a doctor’s referral for alternative treatments and go to a licensed practitioner.
