It was just before 8:45 a.m. on April 13th when officials were called to the scene of an accident involving a tractor-trailer that was hanging off the side of a bridge in Chesapeake, a city located just under 30 minutes away from Virginia Beach. 13 News Now says the truck driver, who was pulling an empty trailer on I-64, lost control of the vehicle after a large gust of wind pushed the truck to another lane. As a result, the truck driver struck the wall of the bridge causing it to break through it. The source says the cab of the truck was left dangling nearly 70 feet above the Elizabeth River with the driver still inside of it.
Chesapeake firefighters along with members of the Norfolk Fire-Rescue and Virginia Beach Fire Department all arrived at the scene. The news source says that Chesapeake firefighters had to first “stabilize the tractor-trailer to prevent it from moving further.” Then, they had to “use a series of advanced rope maneuvers to lower the 25-year-old technician over the bridge, harness the driver, and pull him to safety.”
The technician, who has been identified as Justin Beazley, said that when he got to the driver, they didn’t have much to say except they introduced themselves and he informed the driver that he was going to be putting a harness on his to get him out of the vehicle. Beazley shared that while he has gone through a great deal of training for situations just like this, the strong winds did make the job a bit more difficult to complete.
After Wayne B. Boone, the operator of the truck was freed, he was transported to an area hospital where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Officials say he was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the accident and they do not believe alcohol served as a factor in the crash.
