The accident occurred early Sunday morning on I-10 in Desert Hot Springs around 5 a.m. The Los Angeles Times reports that the bus was returning to Los Angeles after a casino trip when the bus slammed into the rear of a tractor-trailer leaving a third of the cabin demolished.
Thirteen people were killed and over three dozen were injured. Surviving passengers told police that most occupants were asleep at the time of the crash.
“Bruce,” said that he “didn’t hear nothing,” adding, “The impact just hit me from behind.” “Bruce,” said he “blacked out for a minute,” but suffered only minor injuries per CBS Los Angeles.

The bus driver was among the deceased, so it will take time before the cause of this crash is determined. The National Traffic Safety Board will investigate and look to see if the driver fell asleep at the wheel or experienced a medical event such as a heart attack. Investigators will also look to see if impairment or mechanical failure played a role in the crash.
The bus involved in the deadly collision was last inspected in April and did not have any mechanical issues at the time. Additionally, the bus company involved also has a good track record with no safety violations.
