Dallas, TX- Police are investigating the truck driver responsible for the I-20 collision that left four people dead earlier this week.
KTXS reports that police have obtained a search warrant and could charge the unidentified truck driver for the tragic collision that took place in Merkel.
On Tuesday, just before 5 a.m., a tractor-trailer traveling in the westbound lanes of I-20 lost control, crashing through center-divider cables and into oncoming traffic where it struck a sedan head-on.
Three occupants of the sedan were pronounced dead one the scene. A fourth occupant was critically injured and taken to a local hospital, but later died.
The truck driver and his co-driver suffered only minor injuries according to KTXS.
This accident is still under investigation, but police clearly suspect wrong-doing on the truck driver’s part. They have not said whether the suspect fatigue or intoxication.
Driver error is the leading cause of traffic accidents in general, whether they involve commercial trucks or a passenger car, and lead to thousands of deaths each year. In fact, driver error is more likely to be the cause of a fatal or injurious accident than inclement weather, hazardous road conditions or mechanical failure, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
For truck drivers, speeding, fatigued driving and inattention are the three primary causes of devastating collisions. (Drunken or drugged driving is not as big an issue with commercial drivers as it is with passenger vehicle motorists but it does happen occasionally.) Any motorist can engage in these risky driving behaviors, but a size and weight makes the impact of a truck accident much more destructive and twice as deadly. Victims who do survive often suffer severe injuries and, in the worst cases, can become permanently disabled.
