Philadelphia, PA-With winter pounding Pennsylvania with snow, ice, and near sub-zero temperatures, traffic accidents are inevitable. Inclement weather severely affects road conditions and set the stage for a commercial trucking accident. A recent example of the role weather plays in truck crashes is exhibited by a Philadelphia crash involving a jackknifed tractor-trailer.
Trucker Blames Wind for Truck Accident
Traffic on Interstate 78 north of Philadelphia was backed for over an hour after a tractor-trailer jackknifed in the eastbound lanes.
WFMZ-TV reports that the driver told police a gust of wind caused him to lose control of his truck and crash into a guardrail and row of trees on the side of the interstate. The truck jackknifed, crossing all eastbound lanes.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash, but it took over an hour for the truck to be cleared causing significant traffic back up.
There was also a small spill of diesel fuel.
The truck suffered a minor injury but did not want to go to the hospital, the WFMZ-TV reports.
Weather-Related Truck Accidents
Snow, sleet, and ice can make a road very treacherous, so it is easy for a truck driver to lose control on a slick road and crash into another vehicle or fixed object. Even so, just 3 percent of commercial trucking accidents are weather-related data from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Weather may be a factor in a crash, but driver negligence causes most commercial trucking accidents.
A truck driver may be considered liable for a weather-related crash for the following:
Following another vehicle too closely
Failing to adjust speed for conditions
Not using fog lights or headlights when visibility is low
Unsafe lane changes
When road conditions deteriorate, truck drivers have an obligation to adjust their speed and other driving behaviors, so they don’t lose control and crash their truck. Motorists cannot control the weather, so they need to take whatever steps are necessary to keep control of their vehicles. They must pay close attention to the road and be mindful of the weather otherwise they are liable for an accident.
