WSVN-TV reports that the accident occurred around 6 a.m. near the Commercial Boulevard exit. For an unknown reason, a tractor-trailer jackknifed, pinning a passenger car against a concrete wall.
Police say second car was also involved in the collision.
Three people were treated on the scene. WSVN reports that at least one of the accident victims had to be taken to Broward County hospital.
The accident tied up southbound traffic on I-95 for several miles while crews worked to clean up a fuel spill. Southbound lanes were reopened after 1:30 p.m., according to WSVN-TV.
Police have not determined the cause of the accident or who was at fault.
There are a number of reasons why a semi-truck jackknifes. For instance, a truck drivers may need to stop suddenly, causing a truck’s brakes to freeze up and the truck goes into a skid. The trailer, or cargo area of the truck, will then swing forward or to either side forming a 90-degree angle. In some incidents the cab of a truck may end up beside the trailer.
Jackknife accidents have a number of causes which include speeding, sudden braking, improperly adjusted brakes and driver error. If a driver was traveling too fast for conditions or failed to notice slowing traffic, they may be solely liable for any resulting injuries or property damage. On the other hand, if faulty brakes were to blame for a jackknife accident, a trucking company will be responsible for compensating any truck accident victims.
Thankfully, no one was seriously injured or killed in this accident.
