Birmingham, AL- Police say that a truck was distracted when he caused a fatal crash that killed six people and charged him with several counts of vehicular homicide. The tragedy underscores the danger of behind-the-wheel distractions for commercial drivers.

The crash happened over the weekend in Nebraska in a construction zone on I-80 around 11:30 a.m., KSN.com reported. Police said the truck driver was driving at a high-rate of speed when he plowed into a minivan carrying a young married couple and their three children, aged two months to three years. According to KSN.com, the couple’s van was then pushed into three other vehicles in the westbound lanes.

The tractor-trailer and the minivan both burst into flames following the impact, killing all five occupants of a minivan. Several people were injured and taken to the hospital for treatment, including the truck driver. On Monday, one of the victims succumbed to their injuries, bringing the death toll to six.

Police arrested the truck driver and charged him several counts including vehicular homicide because they said he was distracted when he rammed into the minivan. Police did not mention what distracted the driver.

Cell phones are the leading behind-the-wheel distraction for motorists and truck drivers in Mississippi.

This deadly accident underscores the hazards of distracted driving for all motorists and truck drivers. Of course, in the age of the smartphone, those handy devices are the leading contributor to distracted driving accidents. The National Safety Council (NSC) reports that cell phone use accounted for 25 percent of automobile crashes in the U.S. in 2014. Unfortunately, too many truck drivers and motorists forget that a text, Facebook update or phone call is far less important than life, which is why there are strict rules against using a cell phone while driving a commercial truck.
