Philadelphia, PA- When we think of trucking accidents, we often think of them occurring on the interstate or highway, and many do. However, catastrophic truck crashes also happen in urban areas, and occasionally the victims aren’t the occupants of passenger vehicles, but pedestrians or bicyclists. A deadly incident that took place in Philadelphia earlier this week is a reminder that a truck wreck can happen anywhere and you don’t have to be in a car to be a truck crash victim.
Philadelphia Cyclist Dies After Being Stuck by Trash Truck
A 24-year-old bicyclist suffered fatal injuries after she was struck by a privately-owned trash truck in Philadelphia’s Center City area on Tuesday, November 28, 2017.
CBS Philly reports that the cyclist and the trash truck were both traveling west on Spruce Street near the intersection of 11th Street around 7:25 a.m. Upon reaching 11th Street, the truck made a right turn and crashed into the bicyclist who had continued to travel west on Spruce Street in the bike lane.
The bicyclist was rushed to the hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival, according to the Philadelphia Patch.
The truck driver stayed on the scene and is cooperating with police. Their investigation is ongoing as they try to determine if the driver violated any traffic laws.
Bicycling safety advocates in Philly plan to hold a vigil in the spot where the accident occurred Wednesday evening, the Patch reports.
