Pennsylvania, PA- An early morning collision between a tractor-trailer and disabled vehicle led to the deaths of three people. While this accident was a tragedy, it demonstrates how responsibility for any accident can be difficult to pinpoint.
The accident occurred around 4:00 a.m. in Central New York on I-84. According to the Record Online, a Volkswagen, driven by a Connecticut woman, ran out of gas in the right lane of the interstate when a tractor-trailer rear-ended it. The truck pushed the passenger car into the center median where both vehicles came to rest.
The woman driving the car called 911 when she ran out of gas. The Record Online reports that she was speaking with a 911 operator when the accident happened. The operator heard the crash before the line went dead.
The 29-year-old woman driving, her 9-year-old daughter, and unidentified 14-year-old girl, along with two dogs, were killed in the collision.
State police Capt. Brendan Casey said, “It’s just a tragedy all around.”
Capt. Casey also used the opportunity to remind motorists that they need to move their vehicles out of the lanes of travel to avoid being hit. He said a disabled motorist should move their vehicle if possible, exit it, and the get as far away from the road as possible.
The truck driver, a Pennsylvania native, was not injured, and he was not immediately cited for the crash.
When it comes to this accident, responsibility doesn’t fall squarely on one driver’s shoulders. That is the case for many car and truck accidents, and just shows how difficult it can be to determine the cause of a truck accident. That is unfortunate for truck accident victims who believe they are entitled to compensation.
