Pedestrian killed at night by truck on Louisiana interstate

Baton Rouge, LA – Some accidents may seem inevitable due to a combination of factors. However, drivers can potentially avoid most collisions if they are alert at all times and take basic precautions. If a driver is involved in an accident, it is possible that they can be served with a civil lawsuit and forced to pay for property damage and medical bills through their insurance or other means. There are lawyers who work to ensure that their clients are paid properly for any damage that they experience during a crash.

Special concerns for truck drivers

Truck drivers need to be even more cautious, as their vehicles can be more difficult to control, especially if they need to make a sudden stop. If they cause an accident, their employer will likely be financially responsible for any damage caused unless the trucker was an independent contractor with their own insurance. The driver may also face criminal charges if they were engaged in reckless behavior or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

L’Observateur reported on a pedestrian accident involving an 18 wheeler truck in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana [1].

18 Wheeler truck strikes pedestrian and causes fatal injuries

Louisiana State Police Troop L reported that they were investigating a fatal crash on Interstate 12 near Airport Road. The one victim was an unidentified pedestrian.

The victim was apparently wearing dark clothing, and they were in the westbound lanes of Interstate 12 at about 10 pm that night. An International 18 wheeler truck was also going westbound at this time. The truck struck the pedestrian, although police were still trying to determine the cause of the accident.

When emergency workers arrived at the scene, they pronounced the victim dead. The St. Tammany Parish Coroner was working to identify the victim at the time of the report. They found that the truck driver was wearing a seat belt and was not injured during the crash. Although the police did not suspect either the driver or pedestrian to be intoxicated at the time of the crash, they obtained toxicology samples for analysis as required by law.

The police reminded drivers and pedestrians to remain careful while driving or walking. They also advised pedestrians to wear light colored clothing and avoid walking on streets unless there is a well lit crosswalk.
