The FMCSA urges motorists to share the road with commercial vehicles.

Boston, MA- The Fourth of July is right around the corner and summer is gearing up, so there will be an uptick in traffic in Boston, forcing more passenger vehicles, tractor trailers and buses to share the road. That is why the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration launched a new outreach program to teach motorists how they can drive safely around commercial vehicles. This outreach program comes at a good time since the summer travel season is in full swing.

FMCSA Outreach to Motorists

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration estimates that there are two million commercial vehicles on the road. There are millions of more passenger cars creating many opportunities for a crash to occur.

On June 27, 2017, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, introduced the “Our Roads, Our Safety” program which focuses on teaching motorists how to pass a commercial truck or bus safely and how to stay out of their blind spot.

Following a few safety tips can protect your life.

Some of the agency’s recommendations include:

Avoid distractions such as cell phones and GPS devices

Don’t pull in front of a commercial vehicle or change lanes too close to the front because they need long stopping distances.

Don’t follow a truck too closely or you could slam into the rear and possibly slide underneath.

Give a turning truck plenty of space since they need to take wide right turns.

Leave plenty of room between your rear and the front of a truck.

Make sure you can see the truck driver. If you can’t, you are in their blind spot.

Pass a CMV on the left and do it quickly.
