New Hampshire highway was chaotic after a truck driver crashed into several motorcycles

An accident scene became chaotic in Randolph, New Hampshire when a pickup truck collided with multiple vehicles and several motorcycles.

The truck crash happened on U.S. Highway 2 on a Friday night. This section of roadway is about a three hour drive from the city of Boston.

Pickup truck collides with a large group of motorcyclists

Police believe that a Dodge 2500 pickup truck made contact with several motorcycle riders while the two sets of vehicles were both traveling in the same direction. When emergency workers arrived, they found the truck on fire, but did not know exactly what caused the initial collision or the blaze. Witnesses said that the accident scene was devastating, but no one could confirm exactly what caused the mayhem.

Rescue workers airlifted one person to Maine Medical for treatment and two others were brought to Androscoggin Valley Hospital.

Two of the victims who were taken to hospitals were released after a short stay. In total, seven people were killed and three were hurt because of the collision. Authorities did not release any names or specific details about most of the victims, but a local organizer told the media that he believes many belonged to the same motorcycle club and were in the area for an event. They did confirm that the pickup truck was being driven by a 23 year old male who was working for a Massachusetts based transport company at the time of the crash.

New Hampshire state police closed off several sections of the roads in the area for several hours until the scene could be cleared. Investigators also scanned the scene for evidence while their inquiry started. Witnesses described the chaos of the aftermath with some detail. There was a combination of fire workers near the truck, debris all over the road, and emergency crews desperately trying to get injured people from the road onto the nearby grass for medical treatment at the scene.

New Hampshire’s negligence standards

In a situation where fault is not clear after an accident, the state’s negligence rules become important in determining whether any victims will be able to collect money or not. The inquiry can be somewhat complex because the state uses a modified form of comparative negligence. This means that any plaintiff can collect money from the defendant, so long as their level of fault for the accident is not greater than the person they are suing. In other words, this is very fact intensive and the jury will have to make a judgement call in close cases or a settlement can be reached.
