Chicago, IL- A former Tennessee lawmaker is suing a truck driver and two Illinois-based trucking companies for $1.5 million after he sustained injuries in a multi-vehicle crash in early November.
Two Illinois Trucking Companies
Former Tennessee state Representative Jason Mumpower filed his federal civil suit on Monday, December 4, 2017, naming truck driver Pavel Gheleniuc, Gogu Trucking Express of Highland Park, Ill. and Sopranos Inc. of Palatine, Ill. as defendants.
Mumpower who now serves as the chief of staff for the Tennessee State Comptroller was traveling on Interstate 81 in Kingsport, Tennessee on November 2, 2017, when he came upon an accident involving an SUV. Moments later, a tractor-trailer driven by Gheleniuc, and owned by Gogu Trucking and Sopranos Inc. swerved to miss the collision and rear-ended Mumpower’s car pushing it into the rear of a U-Haul truck. Mumpower’s vehicle then rolled over before coming to rest on the wheels, the Kingsport Times-News reports.
According to the lawsuit, Mumpower broke an arm and sustained “extensive” injuries.
The suit claims the truck driver neglected his duty of care by failing to maintain control his vehicle, following too closely and failing to obey traffic control devices, according to the Times-News. The lawsuit also alleges both trucking companies were liable for his injuries.
