Knoxville, TN- When we talk of truck accidents, we often focus on the motorists, pedestrians or cyclists that are injured or killed. But often, truck drivers themselves are injured or killed by other negligent truck drivers. A recent truck accident in Knoxville shows how deadly an occupation driving a big rig can be, and how even truck drivers can be harmed by negligent drivers.
The fiery head-on collision took place on August 28th on I-75 just outside Knoxville and involved two tractor-trailers, both of which were hauling corrosive materials, and a passenger vehicle.
According to reports, Tim Holt, 49, of Kentucky was traveling in the northbound lanes of the interstate near exit 134 around 3 p.m., when he, for an unknown reason, lost control of his large rig. Holt’s truck careened across the center median and into southbound lanes where he hit another tractor-trailer head-on, WBIR reported.
Holt’s truck, which was carrying battery parts, burst into flames after colliding with the second tractor-trailer carrying what has been described as “oxidizing materials.” The impact caused an explosion which sent a plume of black smoke into the air.
Holt was unable to escape his truck and perished in the fire.
Three other people involved in the wreck were also injured. One had to be flown to a nearby hospital but the exact nature of their injuries is unknown.
Representatives from Superlex Batteries where Holt worked for the past 15 years told WIBR he had a “superior” driving record.
Some motorist were stuck in traffic for nearly five hours as emergency crews worked to clear the wreckage.
Tennessee police are still trying to determine the cause of the accident.
