Pittsburg, PA- Accidents involving commercial trucks are a familiar sight on the highways and interstates crossing Pennsylvania. While many tractor-trailers, tankers and semi will pass through the state with no incident, there are plenty of occasions when these large and heavy vehicles are involved in an accident that can have deadly consequences. Such is the case of two recent truck accidents in Pennsylvania.
Today, March 30th, an accident involving a Fed-Ex truck hauling two trailers, a single-trailer semi and passenger vehicle, left one person dead and two others injured.
Police told reporters that the accident occurred around 4:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes of Interstate 78 in Berks County. The exact circumstances that led up to the accident are unclear, but police said a Fed-Ex driver was killed after his double-trailer truck overturned, according to CBS Philadelphia.
The driver of the passenger vehicle and the other involved tractor-trailer were taken to the hospital for treatment. There is no word on their condition.
Photographs taken at the scene of the accident show that the cab of the Fed-Ex truck slammed into the concrete median separating the westbound and eastbound sides of I-78, causing significant damage to the median wall, and leaving the cab almost demolished. The truck completely blocked all westbound lanes.
The accident caused traffic back-ups in both directions, lasting several hours. Police said they hoped to have I-78 cleared up after noon.
On March 2nd, two people from the Pittsburg area were killed when their car was rear-ended by a tractor-trailer on I-376.
According to the New Castle News, driver Bal Bahadur Tiwari, 52, along with two passengers, Pabi Maya Tiwari, 49, and Kheena Maya Khadka, 45, were traveling in the interstate when they either slowed or stopped.
