trucksBrevard County, FL- Pre-dawn fog and a detached trailer led to a tragic accident on a Florida roadway that left four people dead Tuesday morning.

Just before 6 a.m., a trailer became detached from a semi on U.S. 27 in West Palm Beach County, blocking the lanes of travel. Because of the foggy conditions, the cars who came upon the stranded trailer were unable to see it until it was too late.

Police say the first car to strike the trailer was a Ford Focus with five passengers. Next, a Ford pickup truck struck the trailer. Shortly after, a second tractor-trailer came along, slamming into the Focus and pushing into a swampy area on the side of the roadway, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

Four people in Focus died at the scene, a fifth passenger was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. The deceased are:  driver Carolina Ortiz, 39; and passengers Luis Arturo Varona, 17; Alejandro Varona, 16; and Melissa Carolina Varona, 14.

The driver of the truck that struck the Focus was also injured and taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

According to the Sun-Sentinel, the driver of the semi, which lost its trailer, returned to the scene of the accident, but police are unsure how long it took him to realize his trailer had become detached.

Police are trying to determine how the trailer became detached and, according to the Sun-Sentinel, they will be looking into whether there were any mechanical problems.

The driver of the tractor-trailer is a 23-year-old independent owner who left a nearby sugar processing plant before the accident.

The sad thing about truck accidents caused by mechanical failure is how preventable they are.
