It was just after 5:00 a.m. when a tractor-trailer carrying wood veered in the eastbound lanes and struck the gas tank of a Federal Express tractor-trailer traveling in the westbound lanes of I-24. Immediately upon impact there was an explosion that engulfed both trucks in flames, according to the Tennessean.
Both truck drivers were pronounced dead on the scene.
The westbound lanes of I-24 were closed for much of the day Tuesday.
Police are still trying to determine the cause of the accident so it is unclear why the driver drifted in his lane of travel.
The majority of head-on crashes or crashes where a truck veers into oncoming lanes are caused by one or more careless behaviors on behalf of a driver, like driver distraction, fatigue or intoxication. Fatigue and distraction are major issues in the trucking industry.
This year there have been a few truck accidents that have grabbed national headlines and put the spotlight on fatigued driving in the trucking industry. The most notable is a June accident involving comedian Tracy Morgan who is still struggling to recover from the traumatic brain injury he suffered.
After that accident, the Walmart truck driver who struck the limo Morgan and his friends were riding in, told police he had been awake for the 24 hours prior to the accident.
If you have had the misfortune of being hurt or lost a loved one in a truck accident, it could be in your best interest to consult with a Tennessee truck accident attorney to help you recover the costs you have incurred because of a negligent and careless driver.
Federal trucking regulations help curtail some deadly or catastrophic truck accidents, but regulations won’t prevent all truck accidents. There are just too many truck drivers and passenger vehicle motorists on the streets who have little regard for the harm they can cause to others. They act recklessly without considering the lives they put in jeopardy.
For this accident, both drivers were the ones killed, but typically passenger vehicle motorists are more likely to be injured or killed in an accident. Truck accidents are twice as likely to result in fatal injuries according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The costs of fatal truck accident or one which results in catastrophic injuries can easily surpass a million dollars. A cost that many truck accident victims are unable to bear.
