Dallas, TX – A couple who had pulled over due to car trouble ended up getting hit by an 18-wheeler in Dallas.
Fox 4 News reports that while a couple recently was trying to move their broken-down car to the side of Interstate 45 in Dallas, they were seriously injured by a passing 18-wheeler.
Problems initially began when the man and woman were by Overton Road on the Interstate and noticed they were having car trouble. However, there is no where to pull over on that part of the road due to construction, so they decided to get out of their car and push it out of the way instead. Unfortunately, this did not end well.Have you been in a collision with an 18-wheeler in Dallas? Find a truck accident lawyer in your area today.
While most other cars who passed by them moved to the left side of the road in order to avoid hitting them, an 18-wheeler did not do the same. Due to wet roads, the truck driver was not able to slow down soon enough to avoid hitting the couple, and crashed into the back of their broken-down car. Luckily, the truck driver was able to turn the truck quickly enough so that it did not directly hit the couple’s car. The disabled vehicle was spun around and ultimately ended up underneath the 18-wheeler.
Both the man and woman were taken to the hospital in Dallas; the woman suffered a possible broken arm along with some cuts, while the man was in critical condition and suffered a possible spinal fracture. The truck driver was not hurt.
During the truck accident, the 18-wheeler’s fuel spilled all over the Interstate. A clean-up crew had to be called to clean up the mess, and the truck accident in Dallas caused traffic delays for a couple of hours.
Truck accidents can happen to anyone, especially if you have to pull over to the side of the road due to car trouble. Here are tips on how to stay safe when your car breaks down:
Move your car as far off the road as possible.
Just because you notice a wide shoulder does not mean the safest place to stop your car is in the middle of it. The best thing to do when your car breaks down is to put as much space between your car and the road as possible.
Stand a couple hundred feet in front of your car.
While most people stand directly in front of or behind their car, you want to avoid doing this at all costs. One of the main reasons is because if a truck crashes into your vehicle, you will most likely end up pinned against their truck or struck by your own car when they hit it and push it forward.
Call for help immediately.
If you are not able to move your car, then call a tow truck driver or the highway patrol as soon as possible. The longer you wait on the road, the longer your put yourself in danger of being the victim of a truck accident.
