San Luis Obispo, CA- Passenger vehicle motorists can suffer severe or fatal injuries if they rear-end a tractor-trailer or other commercial trucks. One reason is that passenger vehicles can easily slide underneath the rear of a large truck as a recent California crash demonstrates.
California Motorist Seriously Injured After Slamming into Tractor-trailer
A California woman suffered major injuries earlier this month when she rear-ended a tractor-trailer, causing her car to slide under the truck. The crash occurred in Bakersfield on October 3, 2017, on Rosedale Highway, according to Bakersfield Now.
Police told the website that the 30-year-old woman was traveling in the eastbound lane when she hit a semi-truck sitting at a red light. Her car slid under the rear of the truck and became wedged underneath.
The accident is still under investigation, so police have not determined if the accident was the result of drug or alcohol impairment, distracted driving or inattention.
The woman driving the car suffered critical injuries. The truck driver was not injured.
Causes of Rear-end Crashes
Sadly, the crash discussed above appears to be the fault of the passenger vehicle motorist, which is often the case when a car slides under a tractor-trailer. But not all rear-end crashes are the fault of passenger vehicle motorists, truck drivers are also responsible for a number of rear-impact crashes each year. Regrettably, a rear-end crash involving a tractor-trailer has greater chance of being deadly, because of the force a large truck exerts when they collide with another vehicle.
Some common causes of rear-end truck accidents include:
Aggressive driving including speeding and tailgating
Texting and driving
Fatigued or drowsy driving
Failing to obey the rules of the road
