Los Angeles, CA- Hit-and-run accidents involving commercial trucks hardly ever occur. But a recent accident in Los Angeles shows they do happen, leaving many to wonder if the driver has been located yet?
NBC Los Angeles reports that the accident occurred around 3 a.m. Saturday morning just outside LA in Vernon. Multiple outlets report that a big rig driver was at the intersection of East 37th Street and South Santa Fe Avenue when they rear-ended a pickup truck with two occupants.
The pick-up truck became wedged beneath the trailer of the truck, killing the driver. Instead of rendering aid, the truck driver then proceeded to unhook his rig and drive away from the scene.
The driver of the pickup was freed from the wreckage and taken to the hospital in critical condition. The truck’s passenger, a 28-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police told NBC Los Angeles that before striking the pickup truck, the big rig was involved in a minor accident about a block away.
The rig’s cab was located in a parking lot near the accident scene, with one witness telling police she found a 12-pack of beer sitting beside the cab.
Police have not found the big rig driver at the moment but have identified a person of interest in the case. They believe Guillermo Ortiz Jr. might have information that could be important in this case, but they haven’t said he whether he was driving the rig or not.Hit-and-run drivers flee for many reasons, but impairment is one of the most common.
