Rollover truck accidents are often deadly for truck drivers.

Philadelphia, PA-Truck accidents can be deadly, and in most cases, the person or persons killed are occupants of passenger vehicles. That isn’t to say that truck drivers aren’t vulnerable too. Driving a truck is a dangerous occupation and remains one of the deadliest in the U.S. with traffic accidents being the primary contributor. A very lethal type of crash is the rollover,  a fact that is exhibited by a trucking accident that killed a truck driver on the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Pennsylvania Police Investigating Fatal Rollover Truck Wreck

Officers in Pennsylvania are still trying to determine the cause of trucking accident that killed the driver early Thursday, February 2, 2018. According to WFMZ, the police were called to the scene of a fiery crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Berks County around 4:00 a.m. after a truck ran off the road.

For some unknown reason, the driver ran off the westbound side of the turnpike in Caernarvon Township which is northwest of Philadelphia. After rolling over and crashing, a small fire erupted in the cab of the truck.

The Reading Eagle says the driver was unable to get out of the wreckage before it caught fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police told reporters that they are still investigating to determine why the driver ran off the road, but suspect they may have suffered a medical event.

Common Causes of Rollovers in Trucking Accidents

There are an estimated 13, 000 rollover trucking accidents in the U.S. annually, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. That is a small fraction of the over 100,000 truck crashes that occur each year, but rollovers are more likely to be deadly.

Rollover crashes in a commercial vehicle can be destructive. Truck drivers get thrown around in the cab which can cause serious injuries. If a driver is not properly restrained, they can be ejected and thrown or crushed.

Speeding

Speeding is a leading cause of traffic crashes involving both passenger cars and commercial trucks. A truck driver can quickly lose control on a curve or while trying to navigate a highway ramp.

Fatigued or Drowsy Driving

Drowsiness can overcome a person any time of the day, but it is more common at night. Research from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration found that a driver’s alertness is more tied to the time of day than the amount of time spent engaging in a task. So, it shouldn’t come as a surprise people are less alert at night.

Overcorrecting

In many cases, rollover accidents result from a driver attempting to correct deviating from their lane. A sudden jerk of the wheel can throw off a truck’s center of gravity and send them toppling over.

Imbalanced Cargo

Tractor-trailers and other commercial trucks are top heavy, and if they are cargo is imbalanced or not secure, it just takes a small overcorrection to cause a rollover. An abrupt jerk of the wheel can send cargo flying and throw a truck off balance.
